Temple Israel
Temple Israel Vestal is a vibrant Jewish mispacha of 160 families. You can learn more about our facility here. Our building includes a day school, Hillel Academy, and is located across the street from the JCC which houses an early childhood center, after-school programs, a pool and fitness center.
The Jewish Community
Binghamton is also home to an orthodox synagogue, a reform temple, and a very active Chabad. Binghamton University, a crown jewel of the State University of New York System, is within walking distance of the Temple. In addition to the Chabad, the University hosts Hillel, and OU JLIC which operate regular minyanim during the school year and offer programming for the community as well as the large Jewish student population. Binghamton University has a vibrant Department of Judaic Studies and a Center for Israel Studies. Several local supermarkets provide specialty kosher food items, bread and meat.
The Area
Binghamton is the gateway between NYC, its northern suburbs and the Catskills and upstate NY, the Finger Lakes and Adirondacks. Easy driving distance from Syracuse, Albany, Boston, NY, Philadelphia and Washington, Binghamton provides a wealth of cultural, athletic and outdoor activities.
The area is home to the Roberson Museum and Science Center, the Binghamton Philharmonic, the Tri-Cities Opera, The Forum Theatre and the Goodwill Theatre. The world class Corning Museum of Glass is a short drive away. The region also has deep ties to the carousel tradition: six antique carousels, all free to ride; a beloved and distinctive community treasure.
On the sporting and outdoor side, the Binghamton Devils (AHL hockey) and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Double-A baseball, NY Mets affiliate) provide professional-level sports entertainment. The broader region is a adjacent to the Catskill and Delaware River watershed landscapes, with excellent fishing, hiking, camping, biking, skiing, swimming and other opportunities. The nearby Finger Lakes are within a couple hours’ drive, and the local State forests and Chenango Valley State Park offer camping, golf, and trail access close to home.
